SUSTAINABILITY

By abusing fossil fuels, exploiting and altering ecosystems, through a harmful chemistry and now also through genetic engineering, we are throwing out of balance the system that has supported life for nearly 4 billion years. The urgency of the situation is quite real. We have only one planet and we are ruining it rapidly. We are already witnessing the first symptoms of collapse in the form of climate change .

Humans lived for hundreds of thousands of years without destabilizing their ecosystem. In the last 10,000 years we began to have possible harmful effects on our environment, and only in the last 200 years have we had a very serious net negative impact. Access to ever-more powerful sources of energy has given us Humans the capacity to impact our environment to an unprecedented level. In the last decades we have come to believe that, as a species, we are capable of managing our environment. Yet, it is dangerously naive to think that we can manage a Complex System that has worked remarkably well for 4 billion years. We must stop trying to manage the global system and we must begin to intervene and redesign human systems so that they will adapt and conform to their environment.

This is the new challenge in the design of human systems and spaces. 

Con el abuso de los combustibles fósiles, de la explotación y alteración de los ecosistemas, de la química, y pronto también con el de la ingeniería genética, estamos sacando de balance a un sistema que ha soportado la vida por casi 4,000 millones de años. La urgencia es real. Tenemos un solo planeta y lo estamos arruinando. Ya estamos viendo los primeros síntomas del colapso en el Cambio Climático. 

El Humano vivió por cientos de miles de años sin desestabilizar su ecosistema. En los últimos 10,000 empezó a tener probables efectos dañinos en su entorno, y solamente en los últimos 200 ha tenido un impacto neto negativo muy grave. El acceso a fuentes de energía cada vez más poderosas le dió al Humano la capacidad de impactar su entorno a un nivel sin precedentes. En las últimas décadas hemos llegado a pensar que como especie somos capaces de manejar el sistema que nos rodea. Es iluso pensar que somos capaces de manejar un Sistema Complejo que ha funcionado increiblemente bien por 4,000 millones de años. Hoy tenemos que dejar de manejar el sistema global y empezar a intervenir nuestros sistemas humanos para que se adapten al entorno. 

Este es el nuevo reto en el diseño de sistemas y espacios Humanos.
